Airplane Entrance

I was the project lead at my university, where we collaborated with Zodiac Aerospace to develop new concepts for the entrance area design of an Airbus A320.

For the project, we conducted user research to evaluate the current entrance area's shortfalls and identify additional user needs. Our user research strategy was to collect a large quantity of user data. We created  "fun" booklets with interactive questions to keep the user engaged while providing us the information we needed to define the voice of the customer. To obtain a diverse sampling of users worldwide, we distributed the booklets/questionnaires in the passenger areas and flight crew buildings at the Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.

We analyzed and processed the data from our questionnaires and converged them into several themes for the entrance area. An entrance area concept was designed for each theme.

Within the Zodiac Aerospace facility, we used their life-sized mock-up of an airplane to visualize our concept of each theme. We made quick mock-ups to test the themes with the users and designers from Zodiac Aerospace. Out of the mock-up testing results, we designed the final new entrance area, as shown in the images.

The final entrance area concept brings comfort to the passengers by giving direction and creating openness without invading the flight attendants' privacy. Overall it stimulates a better flight experience for both the crew and the passengers.
