E-ONE Steering Wheel

During my internship at E-ONE (now renamed "EV Mobility"), I designed the steering wheel for the E-ONE.  The E-ONE is a one-person electric vehicle that drives 25 km/h in bike lanes.

My assignment was to design a steering wheel that could be manufactured using rotational molding. Rotational molding was optimal for the company as it would reduce production costs and enable the company to produce this component simultaneously with their vehicle bodies.

Designing a steering wheel using rotational molding had various design challenges to overcome. The steering wheel is a relatively small product to manufacture using rotational molding and many detailed forms that required hardware and electronics.  I collaborated with the molding manufacturer and dove into the rotational molding manufacturing processes' technical details. I designed a small detailed rotational molded steering wheel using my creativity and technical expertise.

During the designing process, I made two prototypes. The prototype was made during the early process to test ergonomic dimensions. This prototype was used as a temporary steering wheel during the vehicle tests. The second prototype was the final steering wheel design; this was used to conduct the complete user experience testing to validate the vehicle and steering wheel's usage before production.

The end product is a rotational molded steering wheel that enables the user to operate every function the E-ONE offers. The user receives live vehicle information such as battery life, speed, power consumption and uses it as a navigation system on this interface. The user can put a tablet in the wheel to use as the vehicle's interface.
